"Digital rights are human rights too. But still, they are violated all the time. It is time to establish ways to keep us digitally safe."

The Ground Beneath our Feet: Embedding Digital Rights in Media Ecosystems and Technology Infrastructure

Monday May 15 | 3 - 5.30 PM | Pakhuis de Zwijger, Amsterdam and online

Can you remember the last time when the ground gave way beneath you? When you thought it was stable, but for some reason, it wasn’t? The ground today is not as solid as it seems. This is because whatever devices we use and whatever pathways we choose, we all live in hybrid physical and digital social spaces. Here, the surface is not of concrete or stone or wood but of bits and bytes. It has become nearly impossible to escape this unstable ground, that shifts and moves beneath our feet. How can we make sure that we are walking on stable digital ground?

As digital infrastructures become increasingly complex, it is crucial that we strive towards more sustainable models which embed digital rights at the core of digital infrastructures. Ben Wagner, Professor of Media, Technology & Society, will delve into this topic during his inaugural lecture on May 15 at Pakhuis de Zwijger

Systemic change for digital infrastructures

In his inaugural lecture Ben Wagner will provide an overview of the problem, before delving into these three key areas:

  • the digital infrastructure of museums and cultural heritage
  • challenges of online platforms to democracy and elections
  • as well as the infrastructure of surveillance societies

He aims to suggest hopeful avenues that go beyond just fixing broken systems and instead move towards systemic change for digital infrastructures. Building more sustainable media ecosystems is a tremendous opportunity that can unleash considerable societal and economic potential. And it brings with it the hope that we could one day walk on slightly more stable ground again, without the risk of falling over.
