Exclusive cooperation Conservatorium Haarlem and Berklee

Matthew Nicholl, Vice President Global Affairs (Berklee) with Arjen Davidse, Director Conservatorium Haarlem

The Conservatorium of Hogeschool Inholland Haarlem and Berklee College of Music (Boston, USA) have signed a partnership agreement for cooperation. The partnership means that Conservatorium Haarlem will become part of the Berklee International Network (BIN), a network of the most prestigious popular music institutes in the world.

BIN has 23 members form 21 countries, including institutes in Japan, South-Korea, Canada, Australia, China, and Brazil. The network develops programmes and events which enhance the global character of the institutes, thus creating opportunities for students, staff and alumni. Conservatorium Haarlem will be the first and only BIN partner in the Netherlands.

Exchange of knowledge
The partners convene bi-annually at different institutions around the world for cooperation and exchange of knowledge in numerous fields. Additionally, teachers from Berklee will visit Haarlem for masterclasses and vice versa. Every year, a student delegation from Haarlem visits Berklee for a week of classes and workshops. It will also become more attainable for students from Haarlem to continue or finish their studies at Berklee.

At the end of this year, a group of Songwriting students from Berklee will partake in the annual International Writers Camp organized by Conservatorium Haarlem, just like several other BIN partners from Sydney, Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.

'Entrepreneurship a real priority'
Arjen Davidse (director Conservatorium Haarlem): “It is of course unique that a small institute such as Conservatorium Haarlem joins forces with the biggest and most famous music education institute in the world. Berklee has 4.500 students from 80 different countries, and another 1 million online students from all over the globe. When a Berklee delegation visited us last spring, they were sincerely impressed by our programme and vision. Entrepreneurship is, for example, a real priority and we have very professional facilities like our own stage and several recording studios."

Conservatorium Haarlem is part of Hogeschool Inholland and offers 2 programmes: Pop and E-Music. Conservatorium Haarlem ranked very high in the Keuzegids HBO 2017. The institute was awarded the quality seal ‘Topopleiding 2017’ for the second time in a row. Conservatorium Haarlem also received very high ratings in the recently published Nationale Studenten Enquête.

Berklee College of Music
Berklee was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music is through the study and practice of contemporary music. For 70 years, the college has evolved to reflect the current state of the music industry, leading the way with baccalaureate studies in performance, music business/management, songwriting, music therapy, film scoring, and more. In June 2016, the Boston Conservatory merged with Berklee, creating the world’s most comprehensive and dynamic training ground for music, dance, theater, and related professions.

With a focus on global learning, the Berklee campus in Valencia, Spain, offers graduate programmes and study abroad opportunity, while Berklee Online serves distance learners worldwide with extension classes and degree-granting programmes. The Berklee City Music Network provides after-school programming for underserved teens in more than 40 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. With a student body representing more than 100 countries, abundant international undergraduate and graduate student populations (33 and 53 percent respectively), and alumni and faculty who have won more than 360 Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today—and tomorrow.
