As a result, some education systems may be temporarily unavailable or look different from what you are used to. The Student Selfservice portal will be unavailable on Monday evening, 31 August, due to these updates.

Are you currently completing your enrolment?
Student Selfservice will be unavailable on Monday, 31 August, from 5:30 to 10:00 p.m. If you have any outstanding actions in Selfservice related to your enrolment, please complete them before 5:30 p.m. on 31 August. Studielink will remain available, so you can still provide your authorisation for tuition fee payment that evening. You can also find this information on Knowledge base | Iris. During office hours on working days, you can contact the Central Student Administration with any questions at csa@inholland.nl.

Are you starting a programme at Inholland this academic year?
The name of your faculty will automatically appear in your student details from 1 September. You do not need to do anything.

Have you been studying at Inholland for some time?
Nothing will change in your day-to-day use of the systems. From 1 September, you will see the name of the faculty your programme belongs to in various education systems. You do not need to change anything yourself; this will happen automatically.

This change will not affect the content of your programme, the value of your degree or the support you receive. We are carefully preparing for the transition and do not expect any disruptions.

How does it work?
The survey is conducted by research and consultancy agency Verinorm, and includes a questionnaire and interviews. On 15 April, you received an email with a link to the questionnaire. It takes about 20 minutes to complete and is entirely anonymous.

This month, the catering company Appèl has officially commenced operations at all Inholland locations. Over the past few weeks, the restaurants have been converted to Appèl's new concepts: Goodish (in The Hague, Delft and Haarlem) and Foodsquare (in Alkmaar, Amsterdam and Rotterdam). 

‘These concepts align perfectly with our vision to provide sustainable and healthy food and drink options for our students and staff’, says Facilities Advisor Roos Kooren. ‘We are extremely pleased with this step forward. Appèl has an innovative and customer-focused approach that dovetails perfectly with Inholland’s values.’

Explore the new offerings and HealthFoodWalls
Roos adds: ‘We would very much like to invite you to discover the new offerings in our restaurants. The familiar products are still available, but you’ll also find new products, recipes and ingredients.’ Additionally, 'HealthFoodWalls' have been installed alongside the restaurants. These vending machines offer a range of healthy, cold, and reheatable products, ensuring that you can always find something suitable outside of regular opening hours.

How are you doing? The annual Student Wellbeing Monitor (SWM) helps us gain insight into your well-being, engagement and study success. Researcher Lisa Klinkenberg sees few changes in the first analyses of 2024 compared to last year: "After the corona period, we saw an improvement in mental well-being in 2022 and 2023. That trend is now continuing in a stable way."

Although mental well-being is stable, there are small positive changes. "Teacher involvement and study motivation have increased slightly, and fewer students need extra support. If they do, they will receive it more often," says Lisa.

For the third year, the results have been summarised in an infographic.

The SWM data will be used for further research. This year, the focus is on sources of stress and social safety. "We see that a large group of students experience a lot of stress due to late information and ambiguities in communication within the study. We're going to zoom in on that more," says Lisa.

At Inholland University of Applied Sciences, we believe that being aware of your pension is important no matter your age. That is why we are organising a specific online workshop for international colleagues, together with ABP, to answer all your pension-related questions.

Why should you participate?  
Your pension is more than just a matter of finances; it will play a big role in your future. This workshop is a great chance to gain a better understanding of your pension options and prepare for possible changes that might come your way in life.

Pension workshop for international employees
In addition to general information about the ABP pension scheme, various other subjects will be discussed as well:

• Value transfer (international transfer)
  For employees who intend to return to their country of origin or move to a third country, it is important to understand how pension rights can be transferred.
• Additional deposits (ABP Extra Pension)
  You can increase your pension accrual through additional deposits. This is particularly relevant for those who got a late start accruing their pension in the Netherlands.
• What if I leave the Netherlands?
  This question is very important for international colleagues who plan to leave the Netherlands at some point. We will discuss the impact on your pension and what steps you can take.
• The 30% ruling
  Specific information about how the 30% ruling will influence your pension contributions and payments and what this means for your net income and pension accrual.

From 1 September, students will be required to register for tests themselves, as stated in the Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER). This concerns tests with 'test sessions', meaning physical tests on site. The Executive Board of Inholland University of Applied Sciences decided this at the end of June.

Compulsory registration was already in place for many students, but not yet for all programmes. From 1 September, the application rules will be the same for all students. Having a uniform process without exceptions means we can further improve the quality of services and information provided to students.

The change in policy is closely aligned with the vision of 'a unified Inholland', as articulated in the Strategic Plan. It also fits in with the further flexibilisation of our education, with students able to register for elective courses. The change can be found in Chapter 3 of the Education Guide under 3.5 'test session instructions'.

 Prior to your tests, you will receive information from the assessment organisation about the application procedure.

We were saddened to hear that Albert Brouwers passed away on August 11 at the age of 65, after a period of illness.

Albert worked for more than 30 years for Inholland University of Applied Sciences and its predecessors. He dedicated his professional life to educating students from all over the world in a passionate and distinctive way. His last roles within our organization were that of team leader International Business and Management Studies and lecturer within the Business Innovation program.

For the IBMS students, Albert did everything within his power and within the legal possibilities to allow as many of them as possible to graduate. He was always reachable and always available for a coaching session. Business Innovation students remember him as their lecturer International World of Business. Every year the corridors filled with posters about political and economic events in the countries of origin of our first years, which visibly and rightly so filled Albert with pride.

Albert will be remembered by our colleagues for his wonderful stories about history, his analysis of politics and the world economy, and the sharpness with which he always liked to discuss these themes with us.

Furthermore, we remember the dedication with which he was always looking after our students and his former IBMS team members.  

A special and typical example of that, we remember from the first month of the pandemic. The Business Innovation team met online and wondered how all the students would be coping. Albert said: "I know all the first years, let me just call them all.” He spent three consecutive days in doing so, online seeing all the students in their parents (parents’) homes from Tunesia to the Czech Republic. 

Our thoughts are with his wife and (grand)children.

from 26 until 29 September, Rotterdam will host the prestigious EAIE education conference in the Ahoy convention centre. The 33rd EAIE conference is the largest international education conference for higher education in Europe. Inholland University of Applied Sciences is one of the host institutions. This is an Q&A on this event.

What is the EAIE conference?
The EAIE conference is organised annually by the European Association for International Education (EAIE), an Amsterdam-based non-profit organisation with more than 3,000 members within and outside Europe.

Who is the EAIE 2023 for?
For higher education professionals who want to share and expand their knowledge about internationalisation. Policy advisers, international officers, team leaders, internationalisation coordinators and teaching staff from all faculties can participate.

Why is the EAIE conference highly recommended?
It is the best place to network, but gaining knowledge and inspiration and spotting trends are also good arguments to go. Petra has been attending these conferences since 2008. ‘This education conference does not only deepen your knowledge on internationalisation but it is also a great opportunity to meet and expand your international network.’

How special is it that the EAIE conference is coming to Rotterdam?
Together with the higher education institutions of Rotterdam and the Municipality of Rotterdam we have held the ambition to organise this annual conference in Rotterdam since 2017. That it is now happening offers great opportunities. For us as Inholland, it is an opportunity to present ourselves and show the world how we design our teaching. For the city it is an economic boost around €7.5 million.

Inholland is a funding partner, what does that mean?
Together with Erasmus University Rotterdam, Codarts, Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Thomas More Hogeschool and the Municipality of Rotterdam, Inholland will be in the spotlight at the conference. This means that the Rotterdam consortium will be in the spotlight at the conference. This means that we have our own booth, that we will organise 'Partner Days' at our locations in Rotterdam and Haarlem and that we will host Campus Experiences on our locations Rotterdam and Delft.

Inholland is hosting such a big event and one theme is sustainability. How do you reconcile that?
'With difficulty,' says Petra. 'The contrast between sustainability and internationalisation are perceived as a dilemma by educational institutions. You can limit mobility, for example with online meetings, but real meetings are often irreplaceable. Inholland recently introduced a new traveling policy that promotes traveling by train, so the one thing doesn't exclude the other.

On the other hand, our teaching is geared towards sustainability. By participating in international projects, students learn to look across national, linguistic and cultural borders. This stimulates them to find solutions to global social issues, from sustainable banking to a sustainable food supply. This is how they learn to contribute to a better world in their own way. And you don't always have to travel for that, it can also be done through collaborative online international learning projects.'

How must does visiting the EAIE conference cost?
Early-bird ticket sales started on 31 May. Members of the EAIE pay €749, and non-members pay €959. From 1 July, the price will go up by €90.

What is Inholland's approach to internationalisation?
Petra Hogendoorn-Schweighofer, policy adviser on internationalisation at Inholland and one of the speakers at the conference: ‘Internationalisation is very valuable for our students. The world is becoming increasingly international and the challenges we face often transcend regional and national borders. We therefore want our graduates to be able to build bridges across national and cultural boundaries, contributing to a sustainable living environment and a resilient society.’

In short, internationalisation is alive and well, says Petra. At the moment, we are more and more establishing broad cooperations with our international partners that go beyond mobility. The EAIE conference is a great time to catch up on these partnerships and discover new activities. Internationalisation also often serves as a bridge between the faculties because it can facilitate cross domain collaboration with our international partners. This is also something that our partners are looking for.

’There is significant interest within our degree programmes to develop Collaborative Online International Learning projects (COILs). This way, internationalisation will also be accessible to students who can't or don't want to travel. We're also working hard with our international partners to develop Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Programmes (BIPs), of which we organised five at Inholland during this academic year,' Petra explains.

It is with extreme sadness and a heavy heart that we have to announce that Mina Milusheva, one of our first year International Creative Business students from The Hague, unexpectedly passed away on Friday June 9^th. 

Since receiving this distressing news, Maurice Kemper (team leader) and Barış Altınöz (Mina’s PD coach) have been to see some of Mina’s closest friends on Saturday and have met with Mina’s parents on Sunday.

Mina was a part of our student community and her hobbies and interests included music, singing, psychology, poetry, and fencing. She was originally from Bulgaria with her family residing in Dubai. Her presence added to the diversity of our campus and Mina will be sorely missed. Losing Mina is a blow for both her fellow students and our teaching and support staff.

Memorial gathering
We plan to hold a memorial gathering for Mina in the Mauritszaal at Inholland The Hague on Tuesday June 13^th from 13.00 to 14.00 pm, both students and teachers are invited to attend. This will be a moment for us to come together and remember Mina. Following the memorial gathering, a book of condolences and a remembrance “corner” will be set up outside of Crea Lab 2-012 to leave your message for Mina’s family, boyfriend and friends.

We extend our condolences to Mina's family and friends, and to anyone who knew her at our university. If you have any memories or stories about Mina that you would like to share, we welcome you to do so.
Please know that we are there for both students and teachers alike and our door is always open if you need help or someone to talk to.

Tom started his career at Hogeschool Holland in 1990. He worked as a lecturer economics, finance and statistics at different study programs. Besides lecturing he was enthusiastically participating in all sorts of international projects with partner institutions worldwide as Sr. project manager.

After his retirement, Tom stayed involved as a freelance lecturer for the students of Business Innovation, which he loved to do and, in his words, kept him sharp and youthful.

We remember Tom as a dedicated lecturer with a warm heart for students and colleagues alike. His joyful character was an example for everyone and he always reminded us that we are never too old to learn. He will be dearly missed in the E1 wing!

After a long wait, we can be physically present at our locations again this new academic year. A moment we've all been waiting for a long time. Of course, we follow the regulations from the RIVM to offer our students and employees the safest possible learning and working environment. Examples of this are the indicated walking routes and wearing a face mask in public areas such as the corridors. In addition, Inholland facilitates pop-up vaccination stations at almost all locations in collaboration with the GGD. At these vaccination locations students, staff and external parties can be vaccinated with the Janssen or Pfizer vaccine without an appointment.

Required for vaccination: identification
Also keep an eye on the communication channels of your location for more information. The GGD employees at the vaccination stations are happy to inform you about the vaccines, how the vaccination works or other vaccination-related questions.

If you want to use the vaccination location, please report to the pop-up location in your branch on one of the dates indicated and do not forget to bring your ID with you.

We have received good news during the press conference on Friday 13^th August – all educational activities can take place in the University buildings in the coming academic year. As of August 30^th 2021 education will take place without having to keep the 1,5 metres distance. We hoped this would be the case and have prepared our buildings, but of course it is a great relief to have the official ‘Go’. Just like many of you, we have been looking forward to being on campus physically and meeting you all in person.

Measures
A number of measures apply for everyone:

• Wearing a mask is mandatory when in the hallways and moving between classes in the University buildings
• The maximum number of people allowed per classroom is 75
• We kindly ask you to follow the walking routes we have put in place when moving within the buildings and between classrooms

Introduction activities, 1,5 meter distance rule still applies
Until 30^th of August , the current rules will remain in place. This means that all education related activities will have to follow the current 1,5 meter rule. Programme specific information about the introduction activities for your programme can be found on the MyStart app.

Self-testing
We know you are probably looking forward to meet all your classmates again and be able to socialise in groups, however we would like to assume our responsibility to keep the infection rates as low as possible. Even though it is not mandatory to do, we would like to kindly ask you to self-test no more than twice a week, when coming to the buildings. In the case of a positive self-test, we would like to ask you to stay at home and make an appointment for a PCR test. Doing a self-test is also wise if you have been vaccinated.

Note: only use a self-test if you don’t have symptoms. If this is the case, please make an appointment for a PCR test.

You will receive two self-test kits, if you haven’t already received them. If you run out of kits, you can pick some up at the reception of your location.

We hope you will consider getting vaccinated – it is essential for as many people as possible to do so to fight the virus.

We realize that getting together with many people can be exciting for some. Please make this a topic of discussion with your fellow students and teachers as well.

We hope to see you regularly at the various Inholland campuses and buildings. However, to be on the safe side, we are asking you to take a coronavirus test before coming to Inholland for teaching activities or a student introduction activity.

This is why you are receiving two self-test kits from us at your home address. If the result of the self-test is positive, please do not come to Inholland and make an appointment for a PCR test at the municipal health service, the GGD. If you have already been vaccinated, we ask you to do the self-test as you might still infect others.

Please note that you should only use the self-test kit if you do not have any symptoms. If you do have any COVID-19 symptoms, please stay home and make an appointment for a PCR test at the GGD.

The new relaxation of measures that take effect from 26^th of June onwards allows us to drop the face mask requirement. This means you won’t need to wear a face mask in our buildings anymore from that day onwards. And of course, you are welcome to use the available individual study spots on campus. Make sure you keep the 1.5 meter distance.

Self-test
Are you heading to the university? Although it is not mandatory, we’d appreciate it if you carry out a self-test prior to your visit to the university.

Basic scenario from September: letting go of the 1.5 meter distance
As mentioned in our previous update we will adhere to the scenario strategies imposed by the Ministry of Education, just like other universities (of applied sciences) do in the Netherlands. We illustrate this via the so-called basic scenario: meaning that you’ll be able to attend educational activities on campus every day and that you do not need to keep the 1.5 meter distance anymore. In addition, during an educational activity a number of 75 people is allowed to participate.

Education online and on campus
Last year taught us the possibilities of online education. Not all classes need to necessarily take place on campus. We’d like to provide best of both worlds in September: which classes are provided on campus and which ones can stay online. It is of paramount importance to us that we continue to meet each other and that we can provide you with decent education.

Fall back scenario
We are reasoning from the positive but in case of potential new local cases of the corona virus or in case of increased transmission figures we revert to a ‘fall back scenario’. This would mean we are going back to full or partially online education.

The positive developments are rapidly increasing. We of course keep you informed regarding changes of your studies.

As this extraordinary academic year is coming to an end we would like to tell you how education will look like from September onwards.

However it is still mandatory to wear a face mask when ‘moving around’ outside the lecture halls and classrooms. 

On campus and online education
Last year taught us the number of possibilities for online education. Not all classes need to necessarily take place on campus. We are considering which classes should be offered on campus and which ones remain online. It is paramount that we continue to meet each other and that we can provide you with decent education.

We know it’s not mandatory but we’d appreciate if you carry out a self-test before visiting the school.

Following the relaxation of coronavirus measures for higher education, we are delighted to be able to welcome you back onto campus. We’ve been looking forward to this for a long time! It’s a great first step in the further opening up of our education and interactions between you, your lecturers and your peers.

This or next week, you will receive two self-test kits from us, so you can do a coronavirus test before coming onto campus for educational activities. If the result of the self-test is positive, you must not come onto campus and you must make an appointment for a PCR test through the GGD.

NB: only use the self-test kit if you don’t have symptoms. If you do have symptoms, stay at home and arrange for a PCR test through the GGD.

The usual coronavirus safety measures, e.g. the wearing of face masks and staying 1.5 metres apart, will remain in place on campus. In other words, the rules will still apply even if the result of your self-test is negative.

We urge everyone to take the test
The self-test kits are part of a broader introduction of self-testing in Dutch society. They are an additional tool to combat the coronavirus.

It should be noted that testing remains voluntary in all cases, and it is not a prerequisite to gain access to our campuses. Nevertheless, we urge all students, lecturers and other university staff to take the test, so we can all play our part in combating the virus.

Where do I get the new self-test kits?
As a student, you will test yourself a maximum of once a week, as the aim is that you will be able to come onto campus once a week. Clearly, we are also asking lecturers and other Inholland employees to do the self-test.

We will send you the first two tests to your home address. While you’re on campus, you can get another self-test kit at the collection point near the exit or reception for your next visit. You do not have to apply for a test via zelftestonderwijs.nl. NB: The test is for your own use only. We will endeavour to ensure that enough tests are available but, in the event of a shortage, we cannot guarantee it.

Due to the announced code Red for Monday morning February 15^th by the Dutch weather institute (KNMI) all buildings of Inholland will be closed until 13:00 hours. Practical classes which are planned before 13:00 hours are cancelled.

All online educational activities, like online classes and online exams, will be offered as planned.

The buildings of Inholland will open again by 13:00 hours.

A final decision of the cabinet has been made, a nighttime curfew will be imposed from Saturday 23 January until Wednesday 10 February 4:30 am. This means everyone ought to stay inside between 9 pm and 4:30 am. Fortunately an exception is made for exams.

You are only permitted to travel home after 9 pm when carrying an ‘individual curfew statement’ ánd documentary evidence of your exam. We provide you with this statement after you finish the exam. You can show the documentary evidence of your exam via ‘MyInholland’-app or via the confirmation mail of your exam.

Study at home
Under the current measures we offer almost entirely online education at least until 7 February. An exception is still only made for practical classes and scheduled exams that take place on location during daytime. The commute to and from our buildings are deemed as necessary travel and are therefore permitted. We would like to emphasize once more: study at home. If you really cannot study at home, you are allowed to study at the university from 10 am until 4 pm. Do this alone. Opening hours may change due to scheduled exams and practical classes.

Regarding internships, the same rules apply as to the sector or branch in which your internship takes place. If the activities of the sector continue, the internship can also continue. In case of a necessary travel during the evening due to your internship, a ‘individual curfew statement’ ánd a employer’s statement of your internship is required.

Studying during these times is a challenge. Are you worried about your studies? Or are you afraid you have fallen behind due to corona or to other circumstances? Or are looking for help due to whatever reason? Don’t keep it to yourself and get in touch with your study programme, study counsellor, coach, a dean or a student buddy of the Student Success Centre.

Now that staff and students have had ample opportunity to acquaint themselves with Iris – the new intranet – since February, the moment to bid a final farewell to Insite is rapidly drawing closer. The former intranet is being replaced because it has become outdated and is unsuitable for mobile devices.

If you visit insite.inholland.nl on or after 31 January, you will be redirected to Iris automatically. In addition, any shortcuts to Insite will cease to function from that date on. However, this does not mean that Insite will be ‘switched off’. Behind the scenes, Insite will remain accessible for about a month, so that we can switch back to it in case of emergency.

Users who have stored files and data on MySite (the predecessor to OneDrive) will be able to retrieve these until 31 January.

Ransomware is malware that blocks a computer and/ or all data on it and asks the user for money in return to 'free' the computer/ data.

What should you pay attention to?
When opening an attachment it is essential that you pay attention to the presence of Macros. The sender can be external, but it may seem that this e-mail comes from a colleague or (fellow) student. See below an example of a file with Macros. Before you can work with the file, the Macros must be activated (enabled).

Only click on the “enable content” button if you are sure that the file can be trusted. Verify the sender’s e-mail(address) for authenticity before taking any action in the attachment.

Where does this threat originate from?
This ransomware attack is currently causing severe problems in the US. It is very possible that it will reach Europe (has already arrived in the UK) quickly.

Yesterday the cabinet announced a semi-lockdown to reduce the spread of covid-19 which means that current measures remain unchanged for the higher education sector. However, as of Monday 19 October it will be mandatory for students and colleagues to wear a face mask in all of our buildings. The measure is still awaiting approval by the Council of Inholland (University of Applied Sciences). Until then the urgent advice to wear a face mask still applies.

The advice to wear face masks is applicable inside all building such as the hallways, the corridors and the cafeterias of Inholland. It does not apply in lecture halls, offices and conference rooms. If you feel more comfortable to wear a face mask please do so. The guideline in practical education classes where wearing a face mask was already mandatory remains the same.

Only attend scheduled educational activities
Studying from home remains the norm unless this is really not an option for you. Under the tightened measures the situation of our education activities remain unchanged: education will continue as planned. Only head to the university to attend scheduled educational activities. The commute is deemed as essential travel and therefore permitted by the government.

The following guidelines remain unchanged:

• Study at home.
• If you are at the university please adhere to the rules stated in the buildings to ensure a safe and healthy environment.
• Keep 1.5 meter distance.
• Wash your hands regularly.
• Symptoms? Stay at home.
• In case of infection, please report to study programme.
• Wear a face mask outside the classroom, and in certain situations, inside the classroom.

From tomorrow onwards, Thursday 1 October, we strongly advise colleagues and students to wear a face mask in all of our buildings. This follows as an additional note to our statement of yesterday regarding tightened corona measures.

We adhere to the guidelines imposed in three big urban regions and in doing so, we consistently join and follow the developments of university of applied sciences in all cities where Inholland locations are established.

We take the advice regarding face masks very seriously and consider this as an important step to maintain a safe and comfortable environment with each other and to reduce transmission of the coronavirus.

This advice applies to all public areas inside the building, such as the hall, the corridors and the cafeterias of Inholland. The situation for practical education classes where wearing a face mask was already mandatory remains the same. In class rooms, offices and conference rooms you can wear a face mask if you want but it is not mandatory; the urgent advice does not apply here.

This is of course only an advice but we strongly recommend you to follow this guideline besides the current corona guidelines that are already in place. Kindly help, remind and address each other of those guidelines.

Last Friday, the government announced measures for six regions to halt the increasing number of coronavirus infections. Unfortunately, North Holland and South Holland have also shown a rapid increase in the number of infections. For us, this means that we need to be extra vigilant.

Fortunately, no additional restrictions apply to higher education and therefore to Inholland University of Applied Sciences, since our buildings already comply with the RIVM guidelines. Meanwhile, we will continue to make every effort to ensure that some teaching can take place at the university, as long as everyone's safety is guaranteed.

When doing so, we will naturally continue to comply with the relevant rules in order to minimise the risk of infection and to avoid the need for further measures. In the event of an infection, there will always be close contact with the Municipal Health Service (GGD). Working and studying from home will therefore remain the norm. Only come to our premises for scheduled teaching activities, or if studying at home is genuinely not possible for personal reasons. Stick to the 1½-metre distance regulations in the buildings and wash your hands regularly. You will also need to follow the instructions to ensure that you can move around the building in a safe and healthy manner. Help each other to monitor these measures.

The government is not opting for restrictions for students, adolescents and young adults, but is calling upon our and your sense of responsibility to prevent the spread of the virus. We would therefore urge you to also comply with the RIVM rules in your personal life, outside the Inholland premises, in order to prevent the further spread of the virus.

The crux of the matter is our attaching great importance to your health, as well as that of your fellow students and Inholland employees. We will therefore continue to make every effort to create a pleasant and safe environment together and to make our teaching as professional as possible. We can only do this by working together. We have every faith in you.

Last Wednesday a published post on our social media channels regarding the Black Live Matter-movement caused some stir. It received an avalanche of responses that led to a solid discussion where some people reported they felt offended by the usage of certain words. We regret this. We consider dialogues on racism to be of great value. These dialogues are necessary but also sensitive.

What we aimed to do was to address institutionalised racism and to show our support for the Black Lives Matter movement. Inholland is a place that aims and invites everyone to feel comfortable in their own skin. To create a space for different opinions and to learn to respect and value those differences by professionals.

We are very willing to spend time on analysing our organisation and identify areas that require special attention, so called “blind spots”. We will conduct internal research carried out by our workgroup Diversity and Community of Practice. Inholland represents an University of Applied Sciences where we treat each other with respect, without racism and without discrimination.

Since September 2019, you may be asked to give your opinion on a smoke-free university and your input to help achieve this aim. The promo teams have two tasks: providing information and gathering ideas.

We will implement the top two ideas. This campaign is supported by offline communications from ‘Towards a smoke-free generation’ and online communications including video clips as well as articles on Insite and social media.

We will present information on smoking cessation at the various Inholland locations during the Vitality Days. From January 2020, we will also offer an in-company group training course named Rookvrij? Ook jij! (Smoke-free? You and me!). We will provide further details at a later stage.

In order to inform our students about the new Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) before the summer, we launched a campaign last week. Students received a link to a promotional video that they can already watch at moodle.inholland.nl. If they have any questions, they can contact moodlesupport.inholland.nl to ensure that they are well informed at the start of the new academic year.

Why did you launch this campaign before the summer?
In order to implement Moodle properly in due course, we asked student panels how they would prefer to be informed about the transition to this new learning environment. They indicated that they would already prefer to be informed before the summer that they will be working with Moodle, for example by means of a brief video sent via email, a team leader, student consultation or class representative. The how and what, i.e. the details, could follow afterwards or be passed on by their lecturers. Meanwhile, students from the work placement company Rookie Entertainment have created the introductory video below that contains some useful tips & tricks.

Introduction to Moodle visible everywhere
Project leaders from all domains have been working on the transition to our new LMS for some time now and there are ambassadors/coordinators and education and ICT experts for all degree programmes to help lecturers with the transition. Together, we are trying to tell as many students as possible about the video. With a few hundred views already, we're heading in the right direction. In addition, posters will be displayed at all locations from this week onwards and presentation walls will be provided. Through lecturers, a message on Blackboard, banners on Insite and the MijnInholland app, we expect to inform as many students as possible before the holiday.

Need help?
In the last week of the holiday and the first two weeks of the new academic year, support teams will be present at all locations (with the exception of Dordrecht, where Moodle is already being used). The support teams will be centrally located in each location and will come round to answer any questions students may have about Moodle. In addition, colleagues from the service points have been trained to help people start using Moodle if necessary. Higher education is the driving force behind development, innovation as well as many key professions and services. We apply knowledge as a tool in the fight against ignorance, prejudice and misunderstanding. In addition to knowledge, we also share values, such as social equality for the LGBTI community. We want to show former, current and future students and staff that everyone is welcome to be themselves at Inholland.

Stonewall Riots
Each year, the Pride event is themed around a different issue. This year's theme is Remember the past, create the future. We will commemorate the Stonewall Riots, which broke out in New York 50 years ago and represent a watershed moment in the LGBTI movement's history. The world's first Pride Parade was held in New York in 1970, one year after the riots. See below for more information on the Stonewall Riots.

Space on the boat is limited. If the number of applications exceeds available space, participants will be selected on the basis of their motivation and a lip sync battle. More on that matter at a later stage. See below for more information on lip sync battles.

Of course, all other colleagues and students are welcome to cheer on our Pride Boat from Prinsengracht and get the party started on 3 August! Information and details for fans interested in cheering on our boat will be announced at a later date.

A kick-off lunch meeting attended by Chair of the Executive Board Jet de Ranitz will be held in Diemen at 12:00 on Tuesday 16 April. Here, you will have an opportunity to become familiar with the Inholland participants and receive important information on the latest developments. A festive introductory drinks session attended by all AUAS, UvA and VU participants will be held in Amsterdam this June.

We will work with our colleagues and fellow students from AUAS, UvA and VU to make this year's event another resounding success. Among other activities, we will perform a special act together. This year, NOS will broadcast the event live on television for the first time, so make sure to let your friends, parents, aunts, uncles, and grandma know all about your upcoming five minutes of fame!

Why was it decided that the universities of applied sciences would no longer cooperate with the 2019 NSE?
This decision was taken because the response data from the 2019 NSE was determined to be unreliable. As the information in question is vital to students who are about to choose a study programme, the universities of applied sciences wish to avoid any and all doubt in connection with the reliability of this information.

Why is the response data unreliable?
In carrying out the NSE, mistakes were made in programming the questionnaire and as a result, the survey included incorrect degree programme names and the names of programmes that no longer exist. This led to students selecting invalid programmes when filling in the questionnaire. In such cases, the opinions students shared on their programme are not relevant to the degree programme in question because those opinions have been linked to an incorrect/invalid programme.

Who determined that the response data is unreliable?
In addition to the many reports received by the universities of applied sciences regarding numerous mistakes in the implementation of the 2019 NSE, and the fact that students also reported having trouble filling in the questionnaire, Studiekeuze123 itself has indicated doubts concerning the quality of the response data. As a result, Studiekeuze123 arranged for an external investigation into the data quality to be conducted in the interim, the major conclusion of which was that the existing response data is not suitable for publication. A possibility for correcting the data put forth by Studiekeuze123 is not feasible in light of the current GDPR legislation.

Is there no way to revise the response data?
In order to reliably correct the response data, the universities of applied sciences would have to resubmit students’ personally identifiable details to Studiekeuze123. GDPR legislation prohibits this, however, and other potential methods for revising the response data are only partially effective and could never yield absolutely reliable survey results.

Why is this decision being taken so suddenly?
The decision-making in connection with the 2019 NSE was accelerated as a result of Studiekeuze123's recent intention to extend the response period. In such a case, students would be sent a new invitation to take part in the NSE. As there is no prospect of complete revision of the response data, and questions will therefore remain with regard to the reliability of this information, the universities of applied sciences feel it is undesirable to continue the field work. Asking students to participate in the NSE once more, knowing that the results will be unreliable and therefore unusable, would send the wrong message to students.

Was there no way to predict this problem?
At the start of the 2019 NSE, the risk that GDPR-related restrictions might lead to unreliable response data was discussed with Studiekeuze123. It was not, however, foreseen that those restrictions would result in the current widespread problems. On top of this, Ipsos made certain implementation errors while programming the questionnaire (at the behest of Studiekeuze123), which only served to exacerbate the problems.

What will be done with the response data collected from HBO students?
It has been agreed with Studiekeuze123 that the existing response data from students at the universities of applied sciences will be excluded from further processing by Studiekeuze123. The response data is also to be excluded from any subsequent external use or publication. To prevent any and all unauthorised use, the response data will be destroyed.

What are prospective students supposed to do now in order to orient themselves to choosing a programme?
Within the universities of applied sciences, a variety of objective quality instruments exist for the purpose of continually measuring educational quality and the corresponding levels of student satisfaction. It is reasonable to expect that the universities of applied sciences will now also deploy these internal quality instruments to provide information to prospective students. In addition, the results of last year's NSE are naturally still available.

Is it possible to create an alternative to the NSE that can be used this year?
The universities of applied sciences are free to initiate their own alternatives to the 2019 NSE, and will undoubtedly make use of their (respective) existing quality instruments for this purpose. It would, however, be unrealistic to attempt to launch a large-scale student satisfaction survey as an alternative to the 2019 NSE in the near term. What's more, we are unwilling to ask entire student bodies to complete such an extensive survey a second time.

As it now stands, what is the future of the NSE?
The universities of applied sciences attach great importance to reliable information in connection with choosing a study programme. Unfortunately, the withdrawal of their participation in the 2019 NSE is unavoidable. This is not to say that the universities of applied sciences are in any way opposed to carrying out the NSE in the future. The universities of applied sciences are cooperating constructively with student organisations and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to find a solution to the current problems in advance of the 2020 NSE.

Go International 2019 will take place at Inholland Rotterdam on February 12^th 2019. This event aims to encourage students to take up the challenge to go abroad. This is an annual event this year organized by the International Office.

The International Office and International Coordinator of your faculty will be available to answer your questions. Also, students who have been abroad for study or internship will also be present to share their experiences with you. And not to forget, external parties (in particular for internship queries) are also represented. Still not sure what to do?
