After years of coronavirus-related measures, students from seven research and applied universities were finally able to meet up physically to work together on this theme. It turned out to be an insightful and unforgettable week, full of intercultural cooperation.

The students who took part in the programme, which ran from 14 to 18 March, learned to respond to their intercultural differences as they worked together in projects and developed their international competencies. Six students from Business Studies at Inholland Alkmaar, The Hague and Rotterdam collaborated with students from Zaragoza, Madrid, Nantes, Prague, Katowice and Gent. No less than fourteen different nationalities were involved, because students from other countries such as both Russia and Ukraine took part as well.

Cancelled in 2020, online in 2021
Prior to the week itself, the Dutch and international students had already been able to get acquainted a little during the six-week online programme. The Erasmus+ programme itself had been cancelled due to the coronavirus-related measures in 2020 and was held completely online in 2021, so it was great to meet up in person this time.

Masterclasses, collaboration – and fun
In the online component the students researched sustainable indexes, fiscal tax policy, sustainable reporting, financing small and medium-sized enterprises (SME), fintech and socially responsible investments (SRI). Then, in The Hague the students took part in a programme with a mix of lectures, masterclasses and workshops. Above all, the students learned by discussing issues with each other. And of course, time was set aside for social events too, such as a boat trip from Rotterdam to Kinderdijk and visits to Delft and The Hague.

Educational and enjoyable
On the first day, the students presented their policy papers, after which they approached the themes from a new perspective each day. On Tuesday, they held debates, on Wednesday they worked from national perspectives and on Thursday from personal perspectives. On Friday, students held the individual presentations, and it became clear this had been a highly educational and enjoyable week.

Positive student responses
The students experienced the week as a real highlight, as indicated by the positive responses after returning home. One of the students had a great summary: ‘The more people you get to know, the more opportunities you get to learn in your life.’ Other students too were happy to share their insights into this international collaboration.

Said: ‘It was a really nice experience to meet new people and work together with different cultures. The organisation was perfect: it was hard work, it was challenging, but there was enough free time together as well. It was fantastic!’

Bas: ‘Thanks to the programme I really felt at home. Because home isn’t a place, it’s a feeling!’

Lev: ‘Always watch out for the bikes!’

Krzystov: ‘During the first presentation my voice was shaking from nerves. After this I learned to improvise and became more self-assured.’

Paula: ‘I’ve learned to speak in public, to improvise in debates and to work together as an entire group instead of sticking together in smaller (national) groups.’

International,Students,News

A platform on which they can distinguish themselves with an innovative and multidisciplinary project. This project should focus on either health, sustainability or creativity. Moreover, it should also add a regional value by working in close collaboration with a (local) company, institution or community. The winning team receives practical support and a € 2000, - cheque.

</pp:boilerplate>

Meet URSUS. A self-regulating robot designed to find people lost in the water. Fast and efficiently. Most rivers, canals and lakes in the Netherlands are muddy and dark, with minimal visibility for rescue divers. “Did you know that divers often use their arms to try and find the victims by touch? That costs precious time,” asks Aydan Kool, one of the co-founders of the start-up Trienos. “Our robot scans the water and pinpoints possible locations of the victim. Making it easier for the rescue divers to locate people in the water, and hopefully –save lives.”

A robot assistant. Who came up with the idea, and for what purpose?
URSUS, or the Unmanned Robot System for Underwater Search and rescue, is the brainchild of Aydan Kool, Jorge de Francisco, Marco Krüger, Nora Jakimovska and Thomas van de Laar. Five Aeronautical Engineering students from Inholland Delft, who started Trienos for their subject Engineering Entrepreneurship. “You could say it was a series of fortunate events,” tells Aydan enthusiastically, “our group has a lot of experience in design processes, we really enjoyed working together, and we got a lot of support from our teachers and lecturers. And think about it. Globally, there are 42 drowning deaths, every hour,” Aydan explains. “If our robot could assist in curbing these statistics, it would be amazing.”

What sparked Trienos?
Inspiration hit them at the Delft fire department. “We were struck by their dive site and how the rescue divers currently operate. We felt that we could improve the current process. Make it more efficient. You could say the problem found us really. It was perfect.”

What was the biggest challenge so far?
Aydan: “Getting in touch with the right people. People are too busy to talk to us or send us information, it’s hard to break into that world. And we were just a bunch of students.” Their luck changed for the better when they met Guido Steijaert, owner of Dieperzicht and active member of search and rescue (SAR). “He opens so many doors for us, because he has many contacts in the fire department. Plus, he likes our project and is officially hosting it. So, he’s one of us now. Go figure!”

The world is your oyster, and it shows. What are Trienos’ plans for the future?
Trienos is already looking far beyond their horizon, since several parties have showed interested already. The Almelo fire department might be the first to test URSUS. Aydan: “Rescue diving is our first project right now, but we have many other ideas. URSUS could help build a database of water bodies in the Netherlands. Or, URSUS could appeal to treasure hunters, or might be useful for vehicle recovery from lakes and canals.” Whatever the future brings, the students from Trienos have one main objective in mind: “We would like to have a positive effect on the world,” Aydan concludes, “and for now, if we could save one life, everything would’ve been worth it.”

News,International

Not for our Creative Business students! Last week, over 50 students from the Creative Business and Communications programmes in The Hague volunteered at Social Media Week Holland (SMWNL). The students managed everything, from chauffeur services for conference speakers, to acting as timekeepers during the conference itself.

SMWNL was held from 14 to 16 November at COMM, the Communication Museum in The Hague. This year, Social Media Week conferences across the world explored the theme ‘closer’. This theme celebrates connectivity and the power that technology offers to bring people closer together. With four rooms, over fifty sessions, and more than a hundred speakers, SMWNL offered three days of social media and innovation inspiration. Companies and organisations such as Randstad, BMWi, Lidl, the municipality of The Hague, KPN, Amref Flying Doctors, Tikkie, Growth Tribe, RIFFand Bouwend Nederland provided presentations, workshops and panel discussions.

Second year IMEM student Odevia Johnson explained that attending Social Media Week Holland has really inspired her with great case studies. “I know that influencers are an important tool for marketing today, but it was great to hear the success stories about how companies actually used them. For example, I went to a talk about Salzburgerland. I learned all about the process of how they convinced influencers to come and promote tourism in the region. I really want to pursue a career in events and I now feel like I have a better sense of how to use an influencer to make people interested in a product or an experience.”

Tomisin Akinwole, also a second year IMEM student, loved seeing how new media is being used in so many different fields. “I was amazed by all the people using VR in their work. For example, the forensics division of the Dutch Police was showing visitors how it's using VR to document crime scenes!”

Fellow IMEM student Selina May finds that being a volunteer was actually the most interesting part of her time at Social Media Week. “I knew volunteering would be a great experience for me. It has been interesting seeing how a conference like this operates behind the scenes. It has also been a fantastic opportunity to make real connections in the field.”

News,International

This unique 3-day cultural and nomadic lifestyle festival is held in the last oasis before entering the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert. As it happened, the festival was literally blown away in a fierce sandstorm but the students kept going and came up with useful ideas.

The collaboration came into being after a visit from the Taragalte Festival director Ibrahim Sebai to Inholland’s diversity research group in the spring of 2018. The visit was so inspirational that Sebai invited Inholland students to examine the festival features that influence the visitor experience. No sooner said than done!

Five students signed up and went off to Morocco with suitcases full of useful literature and Dutch delicacies. Besides working hard behind the scenes, helping to set up the festival, they also spent a lot of time researching how to bring locals and tourists together.

In the end, they delivered two deceptively simple tourism offers; a henna space and sunrise mindfulness walk. Both provided a platform for meaningful encounters and deepening the quality of the visitor’s festival experience. ‘It has been interesting to see how they organised the festival in a totally different way’, one of the students said. ‘I’m really impressed by how good they are at adapting to the conditions they have and really feel inspired. I think we can learn a lot from that.’ Moroccan superstar Oum was one of the main attractions at the 2018 edition of the festival.

‘This was our first experience working with Taragalte, but certainly not the last’, coordinating lecturer Philippa Collin said. ‘With their rich network of international musicians and social entrepreneurships such as Playing for Change and Carpet of Life, we see plenty of opportunities for more multi-disciplinary collaboration.’ The students were also enthusiastic and shared their experience:

‘Being at the festival really opened doors to finding new ways of working together with other cultures.’

‘The most important thing I learned this week was making sure you’re able to be flexible. It’s important to be able to adapt to your surroundings because really awesome things can come from it.’

‘It’s useful for my concepting & events course because it takes the theory from the classroom and throws it out in the desert which is very real. It’s a great way of deepening learning.’

Interested in finding out more about this project?
Contact philippa.collin@inholland.nl or abdulkadir.poyraz@inholland.nl
Coordinator of the Concepting & Events minor: Andreas Bischoff

Inholland,International,Diemen,Students,News

And if it’s your birthday, you shouldn't have to treat others; you should be getting cake! This is the case in the Netherlands, but it may be frowned upon in other cultures. There are countless cultural differences. As an educational institution with international degree programmes, you need to acknowledge this fact. Alexander van Zijp explains how to do so.

Together with colleagues and international students, Alexander created a translation of the brand story which retained its essence. One of the fundamental aspects for Inholland is viewing diversity as an asset. Alexander: 'A brand story should never be some vacuous story written by a communication department. We really create the brand story together.'

Taking on challenges

Because there are seven international degree programmes, the desire existed to translate the brand story into English as well. 'This way, we hope to create a stronger connection with the international students coming here. We were aware of the fact that you cannot simply provide a literal translation because of the intercultural differences. Together with Loo van Eck, a brainstorm session was organised with international students and lecturers', Alexander says.

The brainstorm sessions revealed striking differences. Alexander: 'Our brand story in Dutch talks about "daring to learn" and "daring to make mistakes". This notion was a real no-go to our international students. There was no way that they could explain to their parents, who were paying for an expensive degree programme abroad, that making mistakes would be involved. So in the English version, we used "taking on challenges" instead.'

Personal & community-based

The students were honoured to have been asked. Alexander: 'It really made them feel that their opinion was being valued and appreciated. They felt that they really had a say, which is just what we wanted. As we claim to be "personal and community-based", we naturally want our approach to reflect that sense as well! For the next degree programme on our schedule, Mathematical Engineering, we will be taking this approach as well.'

If you would like to know more about the approach taken by Alexander and Inholland, you can download the entire Loo van Eck interview at the top right of this article (in Dutch).

Employees,Students,News,International

Despite the nice weather, many students dropped by to obtain more information about gaining work or study experience in another country.

Lecturers and students from degree programmes in Business Studies, Finance & Control: Business Economics, Sport Studies, Pabo (primary education teacher-training college), Tourism Management, Social Work and Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy (MBRT) with international experience were ready to answer all the questions that came their way. Naturally, the International Office was also there to provide more information about the international possibilities.

Students on their experiences abroad
Nikkie Visser, Tourism Management (HTRO) student at Inholland Haarlem:
‘During my studies, I did an internship with the Cape Maclear Community Tourism (CMCT) project in Malawi and spent some time studying at Groupe ESC Troyes in France. Working and studying abroad was a very educational and unique experience. You meet people from other nationalities and cultures, and you learn to collaborate with them. In addition, because nothing went as planned, I learned to step outside my comfort zone and enjoy the experience abroad. This helped me to further develop as a person.’

Kelly, Sport Studies student at Inholland Haarlem:
‘During my third year, I did an internship in South Africa at Ready4Life. In a township there, I worked at two schools for children with mental and physical disabilities. We played sports and games with the children that they had never played before. These children go through a lot in the townships, so they really enjoyed the lessons and were able to just be kids again for a while. I enjoyed contributing to that. It was a fantastic experience.’

Melissa Smit, Creative Business – Media & Entertainment Management student:
‘I studied in Lillehammer at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, or Høgskolen I Innlandet. I took two courses: Video Production and Visual Sociology (photography). My tips: it’s a good idea to join the university’s Facebook group beforehand. That way, I was able to get in touch with all the Dutch students at the university before I left the Netherlands. During my stay, I met so many nice students from various countries. It is also very important to explore the country where you’re studying or doing your internship. Travel around, go on fun trips and enjoy it!’

More information
If you would like to learn more about studying or doing an internship abroad, please contact the International Office: intoffice.haarlem@inholland.nl.

News,International

Pizza. Cola. Hot coffee and tepid energy drinks. Grunge and hard rock music. Coding. Hacking. Programming. A series of tough assignments. A countdown from ten to zero hours. And the stress levels rising at the same rate. In a nutshell, that’s the first edition of InHack 2018: a hackathon entirely organised by Information Technology students at Inholland Haarlem.

On Thursday 22 March, over thirty Information Technology students from Amsterdam (VU University Amsterdam and University of Amsterdam), Diemen and Haarlem (Inholland) met up at the Start Up Campus Haarlem (SUCH) premises. The first cups of coffee were immediately downed, the laptops flipped open and they got straight down to work. Ten hours to complete your project might sound like enough, but it really isn’t. Danuta Lapina, Information Technology student at Inholland Haarlem and one of the organisers of InHack 2018, explains: ‘A hackathon usually lasts several days. We wanted to have this time too, but it wasn’t possible to use the Inholland building overnight. In order to still achieve high-quality demonstrations at the end of the day, the team were allowed to do a lot of preparation. Everything in fact, apart from the coding. That really had to happen on the day itself.’

Three, two, one … GO!
InHack 2018 didn’t have a specific theme: the participating teams were able to decide for themselves what project they wanted to work on during the big day. From meet-up website for international students to time tracker, from time management app to game – the contributions were diverse. Just like the skill levels of the students. Everyone is welcome, whether you’re a seasoned programmer or a newcomer in the world of apps. ‘That works out, too, because the judges take your level into account when assessing the result’, says Danuta. The projects were judged on technical complexity, originality, functionality and degree of completion. ‘And on your presentation. So here’s a tip in advance: ensure that you have enough time to make a properly functioning demo. Come on, guys, let’s get to work!’ After this starting shot, the clock began counting down and the teams got down to hacking and programming in silence.

Creative ‘abuse’ of Windows
The job was done after ten hours. For most of the teams, at least ... Here and there people were still putting the finishing touches to their demo, jittery fingers on the keyboard. Time had come to close the laptops and present the results. The Plantnation team won the prize for the most innovative idea with an app that reminds you to water your plants. The KeyboardKings were the prize-winning team. Their multiplayer reaction-based game was the best technical design. And there was a special mention for the Patrick’s Late team, which ‘abused’ Windows forms in the most creative manner. The prizes were in part thanks to the sponsors Abercrow, IT jobs recruiter and Podictive, specialist in cyber security. At the end of the event Danuta Lapina was tired but satisfied. ‘We’ll certainly be organising it again next year. But then bigger and longer. At least three days and two nights. Whatever happens then ... believe me, it’ll be really great.’

Inholland,Haarlem,International,Start Up Campus,Students,Employees,News

This turned out to be a very useful gathering, given that this theme is still in its early days and has a bright future. ‘Visitor reactions were positive’, says Stef Barendsen, one of the organisers of the symposium and information specialist at the Inholland library. ‘The dialogue with various stakeholders, the lecturers, publishers and library colleagues, went hand-in-hand with plenty of knowledge exchange. This was a first step, and there’s a clear need for a follow-up with the participation of more lecturers, as well as students and other universities of applied sciences.’

Watch the symposium (in Dutch)

The library of Inholland has been digitalised in 2015, meaning that this university of applied sciences is playing a pioneering role among fellow institutions. Correspondingly, the Duik in het digitale studieboek! (Explore digital textbooks) symposium was mainly intended to share knowledge. How is the education sector changing? Will lessons still be given on the basis of a book in the future? Why is it that students don’t buy all books? How are publishers responding to the digital possibilities for good teaching resources?

Almost forty interested parties attended the symposium to find answers to these questions. It soon became clear that lecturers and publishers are still struggling with the changes resulting from the digitisation process. Chairman of the day Don Ropes (Inholland Professor of Learning & Development in Organisations) showed his ability to uncover the anxieties lurking below the surface.

Changes in education
Supply and demand are changing. Many choices and directions are now possible and it's not yet clear which will turn out to be future-proof. 'The education sector now needs to take the initiative of articulating the new demand, and for publishers to respond with new products. The cost aspects play a role too, especially when students are paying part of the costs for acquisition of learning resources', explains Stef. 'The role of the library is less about offering learning resources, and much more about providing access to a wide range of specialist literature. With its acquired knowledge of the market, the library can play a mediating role for education or help in exchanging knowledge.'

Open Educational Sources
Speakers at the symposium included Robert Schuwer, Professor of Open Educational Resources at Fontys University of Applied Sciences, an authority in the field of open educational resources. Stef Barendsen says that so far, little attention has been given to this at Inholland, but that it’s a question of ‘simply beginning instead of waiting to see what happens, so assuming our pioneering role once again.’

BUKU
Bertus Jan Epema, founder of the online book service BUKU, recounted how he has adapted the Spotify model to student textbooks and is focusing on collaboration between educational publishers and lecturers. Many lecturers felt encouraged to start experimenting with the free version of BUKU.

‘The success of this symposium should lead to a follow-up in which we expand the issue from digital textbooks to digital learning resources and materials’, says Stef. If it’s up to him, the event will also be opened to other universities of applied sciences, and to students as well.

Inholland,Students,Employees,International,News

Their collaboration with Gemeente Den Haag and Culture Clash4U started out as a NEWb assignment. The students started out by setting up a content promotion plan, which focused on targeting young video makers to participate in the contest and the award show. The award show is divided in five categories: Documentary, Short Film, Vlog, Animation and Music Video.

After this step, the students planned the content of the award show together with the clients. After the submission deadline of the video contest passed, the students nominated the best videos for the upcoming award show. Contestants can win € 500, which can be spend on a future profession in this field. Besides the money, the winning film will be screened at Filmhuis Den Haag for a month! During the award show itself, short documentaries, vloggers, music videos and animations will be shown. During the show, on February 17, the IMEM-students will be working as stage managers and front runners.

A student team from the international programme Business Innovation (formerly IBIS) at Inholland Diemen won the 24H DAS Innovatie Challenge with their solution to this case study. DAS, a company that offers legal and financial services, organised the 24-hour hackathon to illustrate that young people are better able than anyone to look at the future through an innovative lens.

The participants were all challenged to come up with an innovative concept that contributes to creating a world without legal conflicts and financial worries. In total, some 55 students – including two teams from Business Innovation – and young DAS employees worked on creative solutions.

The winning team – which won a prize cheque worth 2,500 euros – focused on the case study entitled ‘A world without legal conflicts’. Based on a future societal scenario in which robots take over our jobs, the group worked to come up with a solution to prevent labour conflicts.

Career insurance
'Our solution focuses on providing assistance during the transition period from partial automation to full automation', team captain Anuschka Ried explains. 'Companies pay DAS a subscription fee per employee, in exchange for which DAS provides insurance for the employee’s career once they lose their job as a result of automation. At that point, DAS finds a similar position at another company in its network, while the employee continue to receive their salary'.

Getting a feel for lucrative ideas
It was a particularly instructive challenge for the students that participated. Anuschka: 'I learned how to maximise productivity under pressure and how to get a feel for developing lucrative ideas'. 'The most important thing I learned from this challenge is that the knowledge and skills that I gain during my studies are relevant in the real world and can bring about change', her teammate Tim Apthorp adds.
Employers prefer employees who show they can work in a diverse and international context and who have experienced study or work abroad. It offers you a few days to experience our dynamic, diverse and international world.

Save the date!
During the afternoon of Wednesday 7th February, there is a meet & greet downstairs in front of the International Office. Our guest lecturers and students with international experience will be there to answer all your questions.

You can find the programme of public lectures and meetings at the info desk in the central hall. Most sessions are accessible to everyone, but a handful is limited to specific groups.
