Pieter Breek, researcher at the Inclusion in the Creative Industries research group, and lab coordinator at the International Music Industry lab, has won an Emerald Literati Award for his paper titled "Street-level bureaucrats: tensions and challenges in online placemaking" , published in the Journal of Place Management and Development. The paper shows the influence of social media on placemaking: activities aimed at the physical and social environment of a neighborhood.

I am incredibly proud to receive the award. Conducting research and publishing in academic journals involves long periods of uncertainty. You hope the insights from your research will be a valuable contribution to the academic debate. Having the journal's editorial team, made up of fellow scientists, choose your article as the best of the year is, of course, very gratifying.

Pieter Breek

The article is part of Pieter Breek's thesis and is currently being reviewed by the PhD committee. In his thesis, he examines the notion that social media automatically contributes to inclusive and democratic placemaking with a critical eye. This thesis reveals the obstacles and tensions associated with social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, in conjunction with placemaking. It also provides valuable insights to professionals in the public domain for meaningful neighborhood development.
