Tensions in the Middle East and their impact on us

Events around the world are moving quickly and can cause a lot of concern. The recent escalation in the Middle East, where the United States and Israel carried out airstrikes on targets in Iran and Iran responded, shows once again how quickly situations can change and how tensions can spread worldwide. These developments come on top of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the long-running conflict in Israel and Gaza. At the same time, there are tensions in many other parts of the world.

“We see that events in the world, including the current escalation in the Middle East, can affect both colleagues and students,” says Jeroen van den Berg, Chair of the Executive Board. “You may feel worried, or you may know someone who is directly affected. For some people, these developments feel very close to home. For others, they raise questions or concerns. Whatever your experience, it is understandable if this affects you. At Inholland, we want to be a place where there is space to share how you feel and where we continue to meet each other with care and respect.”

Space for conversation and support
We want everyone to feel seen and supported. That is why several forms of support are available.

  • You can speak to your manager or a confidential adviser.
  • You can also contact services within the Student Success Centre (SSC).
  • You can also request a personal conversation with your study career coach or with the student counsellor.

Look out for each other
Jeroen adds: “Especially in uncertain times, it is important that we are there for each other. Sometimes a small gesture, such as listening, asking an open question or taking a moment to check in, can make a big difference.

We will continue to follow developments around the world and will inform you if they are relevant to our community. For now, we want to emphasise one thing: take good care of yourself and of each other.”
