Tourism is big business and you know it. You love to travel and you can't wait to contribute to the tourism industry by developing the best experiences. You are curious to learn what drives people and have an open mind in finding answers. You are an energetic team-player with an international focus, someone who is ready to work hard and pleasant to work with. 


The four-year Tourism Management degree combines theory with practice. You will immediately collaborate with companies from the field. Below you can read how the four years are structured.



Tourism Management focuses on the business side of tourism. You will cover general management subjects and specialist tourism courses, which makes you attractive to employers in different sectors. You get a good dose of theory that you put into practice during projects and an internship. You follow the course near one of the tourist capital of the world: Amsterdam. Here you’ll benefit from partnerships with international organisations and the guidance of an enthusiastic team of teachers with experience in the field.

Programme structure

The first two years of this programme aim to equip you with a broad sense of what tourism management is about. The third year partly consists of a five month internship, while the other part allows you to study abroad at one of our partner universities abroad. The first half of the fourth year is focused on a specialised tourism subject , such as Global Tourism Perspectives or Destination Management. During the last half of the fourth year, you will work towards graduation.

How you will learn

  • Theory

The first part of your degree mainly consists of fundamental management and tourism subjects. Besides attending timetabled teaching, you will also spend time studying independently and undertaking research.

  • Projects

Theory is immediately linked to practice. You will tackle assignments, such as setting up your own travel event or destination marketing campaign, in multicultural project groups.

  • Practice

Immerse yourself in the industry through (international) excursions and company visits. The five month internship in year 3 is your chance to gain experience working in a tourism company abroad.

  • Research

From the first to the fourth year, you are working on your research skills. You carry out research during every project, including the internship and your graduation project.

Year 1

Year one

The first year's projects and subjects give you a broad introduction to the tourism industry. You will learn how tourism products are created and developed, examine current tourism trends and gain insight into tour operating, sales and e-business. You will also go on a trip to a major tourist destination.

Year 2

Year two

The second year focuses on gaining hands-on experience. You will work on real projects for various companies. Examples are developing a product for a tour operator or writing a plan to attract more visitors to your hometown. You will join a research trip abroad and visit local tourism companies. You will also choose which specialisation courses you want to take in year three.

Year 3

Year three

Taking the plane for an internship abroad? A logical step for a tourism student! If only because this sector itself knows no boundaries. Inholland has good links with international companies and our students have worked in the hotel industry, with tour operators, at governmental agencies, destination management companies and specialist travel companies.

Specialisation phase
Afterwards, you will enter the specialisation phase in year 3 and 4. You can select courses  that match your personal interests and ambitions. Each subject focuses on a different country or aspect of tourism, such as policy-making, consultancy, accounting, marketing, communication or IT, as well as other subjects relevant to tourism and travel. Other examples of study choices are:

Year 4

Year four

You can select a specific focus for your graduation phase: Destination Management or Responsible Travel. You will immerse yourself in the field you have chosen, completing projects commissioned by the professional world, such as:

  • Planning, organising and delivering a study trip for first-year Tourism students
  • Developing a plan to improve tourism at destinations such as Senegal, Ghana or Indonesia
  • Creating new tourism concepts for a destination (e.g. Amsterdam, Norway, Berlin or the Pacific Region)

Bachelor of Arts
Once you have successfully completed Tourism Management, you have earned the title Bachelor of Arts!

Make the most of your degree

Get off to a good start

To make sure you feel right at home at Inholland, you will be assigned a study coach. In the first year, you will meet with your study coach every term to discuss how you are getting on in the programme. The assignments you will work on, will also give you more insight into the professions that will be available to you after graduation. In subsequent years, your study coach will help you decide on, for instance, your specialisation phase and internships.

More opportunities to go abroad

The tourism department has an international network, so you can follow part of your degree at one of our partner institutions. Besides that, we will also encourage you to secure your internship abroad. There are connections with organisations, such as World Adventures (Costa Rica), Pelorus Eco Adventures (New Zealand), Explore Sideways (South Africa) and UNWTO (Spain).
