International Exchange with Berklee College of Music (USA)

Berklee exchange

Every year, Inholland and Berklee College of Music in Boston (USA) organise an International Exchange for students. In the week of 8-14 April, ten third-year students from Inhollands Creative Business programme in The Hague, Rotterdam and Haarlem are hosted by students from Berklee. Berklee students will then make a return visit to Inholland Haarlem and The Hague in the week of 22 April.

Berklee College of Music is a premier performing arts conservatory: 107 alumni, including well-known names like John Mayer, Esperanza Spalding, Melissa Etheridge and Quincy Jones, have received as many as 266 Grammy Awards. What an amazing opportunity to spend a week at such a prestigious institution! Once a year, Creative Business students who are taking the Music Business minor, which is taught in English, get such an opportunity. The students have applied in advance and have been selected on the basis of their letter of application. The aim of the exchange is to give students international experience, to share knowledge, to establish an international network and to build a bridge between Europe and the US in the Music Business field.

Creating a platform
“The cultural diversity of Europe creates musical styles and artists that really interest people in the US,” says Neeltje Mooring, project leader for the Exchange with Berklee and module leader for the Music Business module. “At the same time, the differences in history, legislation, language, currency and culture make the licensing of music a complex business. By creating a platform that allows our students to share knowledge with students from the US, we address the topical issue of Global Music Licensing."

Spotify and YouTube
In Boston, the Inholland students will attend lectures and workshops on topics including Business Leadership & Ethics, Creative Commons in New Media and Principles of Business Management. They will also visit companies in Boston and New York, such as Downtown Music Publishing, Spotify and YouTube. Neeltje Mooring and Guus Bleijerveld will give guest lectures on Creative Music Licensing and Legal Aspects.

Programme at Inholland The Hague and Haarlem
The programme for the week of 22 April at Inholland Haarlem and The Hague will include, amongst other things, (guest) lectures on Music Publishing/Licensing, Discussions on Papers and Big Data and the Music Industry, and an EDM workshop by Conservatorium Haarlem. In addition, the students in The Hague will work on a role-play, in which Berklee students will play the role of ‘music supervisor’ and Inholland students will play the role of ‘music company’. Finally, the students will visit the Koninklijk Theater Carré theatre and MassiveMusic in Amsterdam.
