Marije Deutekom will be joining Inholland’s Executive Board with effect from 1 March 2022, succeeding Huug de Deugd who will be leaving the university of applied sciences next month after many years of service. ‘In Marije, we have found a worthy successor to Huug. She combines in-depth knowledge of both research and education with solid administrative experience in a complex organisation’, says Siebe Riedstra, chair of the Supervisory Board, in a response. ‘Inholland stands for learning = daring, a university of applied sciences in which we challenge everyone to continue growing. Marije is living proof of this. She was already an inspiring figurehead for sport, at GSW and the Haarlem location, and will now perform the same role for the entire university of applied sciences.’

Marije Deutekom joined Inholland ten years ago as a lecturer in Sport Studies. She has been professor of Power of Sport since 2015, also for Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, and has been director of the Faculty of Health, Sports and Social Work and the Inholland Haarlem branch since February 2020.

‘We are very pleased that Marije will be joining our team’, said Inholland Executive Board President Bart Combee. ‘We also like the fact that we have been able to give someone from within the university of applied sciences – with so much organisational and educational experience – the opportunity to take this further step in their career. Marije has already taken impressive steps with the Faculty of Health, Sports and Social Work. The establishment of the Centre of Expertise for Prevention in Care & Welfare is an important example of this; a good partnership with the professional field with a view to contributing to a healthy and inclusive society. Her efforts for the Haarlem location have not gone unnoticed either. Despite the pandemic, considerable progress has been made with the reorganisation and upgrade of the location, partly to prepare the building for the future with regard to ‘flexible learning and working’, with more opportunities for hybrid forms of education, meeting and interaction.’

Marije herself says about her appointment: ‘Since I first started working at the university, I have always wanted to contribute to strengthening Inholland's education, research and profile. I can see a great deal of quality and energy in our university of applied sciences and a huge ambition to also show the outside world all the wonderful things we are doing. After two years as the director of an excellent location and faculty, this feels like a natural next step. I am pleased and proud that, as a member of the Executive Board, I will be able to continue to build on this outstanding university of applied sciences together with Bart and Mieke and all the Inholland staff and students. I can't wait to get started!’

The Inholland appointment advisory committee (with representatives from the faculties, support services and representative advisory council), has issued a positive recommendation to the Supervisory Board on the appointment of Marije Deutekom. Within the Executive Board, she will be responsible for the education and research portfolio. Once Marije has started in her new role, the exact portfolio allocation (such as faculties and branches) will be determined in consultation within the Executive Board.

Marije Deutekom’s departure will create a vacancy for a faculty director for the Faculty of Health, Sports and Social Work and the Haarlem branch in the short term. More information on the (possibly temporary) succession will follow as soon as possible.
