Curriculum Modeling of Robotic Systems

During the course you will gain extensive insight in the State of the Art tools used in Robotics Research & Development. Theory combined with hands-on experience enables you to choose the R&D tools best suited for modeling your robot application and how you can use modeling in the development of a complex robotic system.

The content program includes the following topics:

  • Introduction to robot modeling from different perspectives: mechanical -, electrical -, computer - and mechatronic engineering
  • Visualization of robots and robot data using the ROS tools RVIZ and GAZEBO
  • Modeling of mobile robots, path planning, SLAM
  • Modeling of robot kinematics (forward/inverse), avoiding singularities and exploiting redundant degrees of freedom (2 days)
  • Modeling of the dynamics of a robotic system (friction, stiction, elasticity, inertia)
  • Modeling of control loops in a robotic system, creating smooth motion (2 days)
  • Modeling the software of a robotic system (process algebra, dezyne) (2 days)
  • Ethics of robotic systems
  • Security of robotic systems
  • Case study of integrating all aspects of the modeling simulation and implementation of a robotic system (4 days).

The course structure

The Modeling of Robotic Systems course comprises 14 days in total with one training day a week.

Each course day has a block of theory in the morning (9.00 – 13.00 o’clock) and practical case studies in the afternoon (14.00 – 18.00 o’clock).

The morning part covers the theoretical aspect of robotics. The afternoon part covers a case study that the students have to execute in small groups. A case study involves the design, implementation and testing of robotics on a robotic system. The case studies are closely related to examples found in the domains industry, agriculture and healthcare.

Lecturers

The course is coordinated by dr. ir. C.J.M. Heemskerk. He has over 30 years of experience in robotics. He is a full professor at the Inholland University of Applied Science and managing director of Heemskerk innovative Technology.

Dr. A.H. Boode (modeling of robot software) is a lecturer/researcher at Inholland Alkmaar. He has a background in mathematics and modeling of hard real-time systems. Ton is involved in the HiPerGreen and Scout projects which are part of the lectorate Robotica of the Inholland University of Applied Science.

Drs. M.A.M. van Kemenade (robot ethics) is a lecturer/researcher at Inholland Alkmaar. She has a background in social sciences. Margo was involved in the Selemca project of the research facility in Amsterdam, which resulted in the award winning documentary “Ik ben Alice”.

Ir. J. van Hulzen is a lecturer electrical engineering at Inholland Alkmaar. He has a background in modeling and the design of mechanical, mechatronic and control related applications. Jan has written several publications and is involved in the project Education using videoclips.

The course will be completed with various lectures from the active field with an expertise related to the subject of the day.
