Exploring cost trajectories of patients admitted to geriatric rehabilitation in the Netherlands

Samenvatting

Geriatric rehabilitation (GR) is an essential component of transitional care. However, insight into longitudinal care useandrelatedcostsislimited. This study examined healthcare use and costs of geriatric rehabilitation (GR) in the Netherlands over six months. The average cost per patient was €40,469. Two groups emerged: a large lower-cost group and a small high-cost group (12%) responsible for 23% of total costs. Higher costs were linked to hospital admissions, nursing home care, and longer rehabilitation stays. Most patients returned home. Early identification and better care coordination, especially shifting care closer to home, may reduce costs and improve efficiency.
