Ben is naast zijn werk bij Inholland ook directeur van het AI Futures Lab on Rights and Justice aan de TU Delft en hoogleraar Human Rights & Technology aan de IT:U. Zijn onderzoek bij Inholland richt zich op digitale rechten, de governance van AI en de rol van de publieke en non-profitsector in tijden van technologische transitie.

Ben doet al jaren onderzoek op het snijvlak van sociale wetenschappen, technologie en mensenrechten. In 2013 promoveerde hij aan de European University Institute in Florence op het proefschrift over vrijheid van meningsuiting en regulering van online content. Sindsdien publiceert hij regelmatig in toonaangevende internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschriften over onderwerpen zoals digitale mediagovernance, de maatschappelijke impact van technologie en de vraag hoe digitale mediasystemen mensenrechten kunnen ondersteunen. 

Hij richtte het Center for Internet & Human Rights op aan de Europese Universiteit Viadrina en was directeur van het Sustainable Computing Lab aan de Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien. Ook was hij lid van de adviesraad van ENISA, het Europees Agentschap voor Cyberbeveiliging.

Bij Inholland werkt Ben met zijn team aan verschillende grote onderzoeksprojecten, waaronder ReSocial en Fabricated. Daarnaast is hij lid van de beleidsadviesraad van de European Cloud for Heritage OpEn Science (ECHOES).
