Harmen Bijwaard is sinds 2013 lector van het lectoraat Medische Technologie en daarmee onderdeel van het kenniscentrum Gezondheid, Sport en Welzijn en het Centre of Expertise Preventie in Zorg & Welzijn. Harmen maakt onderdeel uit van het en doet praktijkgericht onderzoek in de medische beeldvorming, radiotherapie en ict in de zorg. In de zorg bestaat grote behoefte aan kennis die bijdraagt aan verbetering van de beroepspraktijk op deze vakgebieden.
Met zijn onderzoek draagt Bijwaard bij aan kennisontwikkeling en kennisverspreiding. De onderzoeksresultaten worden indien mogelijk direct toegepast bij de bacheloropleiding Medisch Beeldvormende en Radiotherapeutische Technieken (MBRT) en de masteropleidingen Medical Imaging/Radiation Oncology (MIRO) en Digitale Transformatie in Zorg en Welzijn (DTZW). Dit gebeurt in de vorm van workshops, masterclasses en curriculumontwikkeling. Daarnaast krijgen studenten begeleiding bij onderzoeks- en afstudeerprojecten en wordt bijgedragen aan deskundigheidsbevordering van docenten.
Samenwerken
Harmen Bijwaard onderhoudt relaties met universiteiten en andere onderzoeks- en kennisinstellingen. Enkele partners zijn de Vrije Universiteit en het VU-medisch centrum, het Nederlands Kanker Instituut Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. Daarnaast is er een samenwerkingsverband met de sector Health van Siemens Nederland. Op internationaal vlak werkt Bijwaard samen in het 'European Centre for Applied Radiography Research and Scholarly Activities' (ECARRSA) met London South Bank University en University of Ulster.

Expertise
Naast zijn functie als lector is Harmen Bijwaard opdrachtcoördinator Medische Stralingstoepassingen aan het Centrum Veiligheid van het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu.
Ervaring
Na een kort traineeship bij het CBS werd Bijwaard in 2000 onderzoeker bij het Laboratorium voor Stralingsonderzoek van het RIVM en in 2005 projectleider. Daar was hij betrokken bij de nucleaire ongevalsorganisatie, ketenmodellering van radioactiviteit en met name mechanistische modellering van carcinogenese en atherosclerose. Vanaf 2003 heeft hij zich ook beziggehouden met patiëntveiligheid, kwaliteitsborging en technische ontwikkelingen van medische stralingstoepassingen (radiodiagnostiek, radiotherapie en nucleaire geneeskunde).
Over Harmen
Harmen Bijwaard heeft natuurkunde, sterrenkunde en geofysica gestudeerd aan de Universiteit Utrecht en is in 1994 cum laude afgestudeerd in de geofysica. Zijn promotie in de seismische tomografie in 1999 leidde tot publicaties in Nature en Science.
